FAQs

Where are you located?

We are located at 23910 Walden Road, Abingdon, VA.  Look for the blue barn!  The door to enter is on the side closest to the road.

Do I need to register ahead of time?

If you would like, pre-register or just show up! Pre-registering for classes (either through the Momence app or clicking on “Schedule” on whitetopyoga.com) will guarantee your space. Any questions or problems? Call 276.492.6901 or email info@whitetopyoga.com.

What should I bring?

Come as you are… a few minutes early, in comfortable clothes that you can move in, and planning to be barefoot! If you have a yoga mat, feel free to bring it as well as any personal props you like to use. We have blocks, bolsters, straps, and blankets available for use at the studio, as well as a small retail space if you’d like to buy your own. Our studio mats are the same Manduka-brand mats that we sell, so you can try out the different types before you buy.

What is yoga and why should I do it?

Yoga comes from India and is an ancient system of caring for yourself through movement, breathing, and meditation. Most of the time you hear about a “yoga class” in Western culture, we technically mean a “yoga asana” class meaning being guided by a teacher to move our bodies through different postures, while connecting our breath (inhales and exhales) to the movement.

There are many benefits of yoga for EVERY body. We often hear “I can’t do yoga because I’m not flexible and have terrible balance!” On the contrary!! We think you’re a great candidate to give yoga a try. While different classes have different focuses, yoga classes often include some if not all of the following benefits:

  • Increased flexibility

  • Better balance

  • Strength-building

  • Stress-relief

In Sanskrit (the ancient language of yoga), the word “yoga” means to yoke or unify. Through regular practice, a dedicated practitioner begins to experience the benefits of peace of mind, health, and well-being.

Why should I come to Whitetop Yoga?

Out-of-town guests are often surprised by our daily schedule and plethora of wonderful yoga teachers here in a small, rural, southern town. We are another part of the unique offerings of lovely Abingdon, Virginia! Our studio is specifically dedicated to yoga. We work to have an inviting, comfortable, well-equipped, but simple space that is always ready for your bare feet to roll out a mat, get a cup of tea, and enjoy time “refilling your cup.” Our location in Washington County (just a couple minutes outside Abingdon town limits) is an opportunity to enjoy Appalachian countryside.

Robyn Raines, the owner of Whitetop Yoga, is committed to respecting yoga’s Indian roots and took her first trip to India the same year she became owner of WTY. Since 2017, she has traveled to India six times learning about water access and quality; visiting yoga centers; building friendships; and deepening her understanding and personal Ayurveda practice. (Ayurveda is the sister science of yoga, which includes daily habits and nutrition as preventative health care.) Robyn plans to continue annual visits to India and is excited to talk more to you about her love of that culture!

How do I begin?

We are excited to introduce you to yoga!

For anyone who’s never been to WTY before, we have a New Student Special: Unlimited Month for $45, which means that for $45, you can come to as many regularly-scheduled, weekly classes over a 30-day period to explore different types of classes, teachers, & times of day. Or you’re welcome to do a single drop-in class for $20.

Beginners are welcome in any class, however we recommend having a few class experiences under your belt before jumping in “Strength & Flow.”

Many times, beginners prefer to start with a few private sessions, either individual or with a friend(s). This is a great way to experience the space; gain confidence; and know more of what to expect later in a group class.

Do you offer private classes? Prenatal yoga? Workshops?

Yes! Yes! And yes!

Check out the “Pricing” and “Special Events” pages here on our website. Plus, on the “Schedule” page, notice the tabs for “Classes”, “Workshops”, and “Series” right above the calendar!

What’s the minimum age to attend class?

We wish we had been introduced to yoga at a younger age, therefore our policy is that youth under age 16, can attend class for free with a participating adult. While we don’t have a minimum age, we do ask that the child be able to “hang in there” (on a yoga mat) for the entirety of class without disturbing other students’ experience. They need to be quiet (like everyone else) and no food in the studio. Basically, would you want to be practicing beside this tiny human in your yoga class?

When will we have goat yoga?

It’s true that Whitetop Yoga sits on 11-acres of Southern Ten Farms (Robyn & Chris, her husband’s, Nigerian Dwarf dairy goat farm). And it is strange irony that there happens to be both goats and yoga. But not together. We’re serious : )
